CAUSES of THE REVOLUTION

There were many causes for the Glorious Revolution, King James II was overthrown for his beliefs and actions against the Anglicans. Many of these causes ranged from being cultural to political, and all were important for the outcome of the revolution, or the deposition of King James II.

King James II was a Catholic that had certain views that went against the majority of England, who were Anglican protestants. He did many things that angered them, such as imposed indulgences for non-Anglicans, change the protestant parliament for Catholics and created laws that changed the way people lived in England. This only angered the protestants and the society of England even more, since they already had a tense rivalry. They believed that Catholics would eliminate the protestant religion and ultimately caused parliament and society to act against the king.

Parliament had originally planned for King James II to live out his reign, and when he died, take Catholicism with him. The Anglicans in England disliked King James II, and his Catholic views and wanted a new king that was Protestant. Much of the English society feared that Catholicism was going to take over England and the fear became worse when King James II’s wife unexpectedly had a son. Since being a king was passed down through heredity, his son would be the next king of England, and the Parliament did not want this so they acted to replace him with his daughter’s husband: William of Orange.

In conclusion, there were many causes to the to the Glorious revolution, but the main ones were political and cultural. King James II created laws and policies that neither Parliament nor the society agreed with, and angered them to a point where they needed to take action and replace the king. Aiding their anger, King James II had a son, which meant that instead of the Catholic faith dying with him, his son would become the next king, raised with Catholic beliefs. England could not have another Catholic king, so Parliament decided to replace him with William of Orange, King James’ daughter's dutch husband who invaded England shortly after being called by Parliament.

Causes for the Glorious REvolution

Long Term Causes:

One of the biggest changes that happened during the revolution was hands down the Bill of Rights. The bill was created to prevent future generations of rulers to be as ruthless and selfish. This also forced any economical, political, or military services to go through the parliament, first that way they would have some power over the ruler. (Both of James’s offspring’s had to sign the Bill of Rights)

This also prevents England from becoming an Absolute Monarchy, because the parliament also has a lot of power too, and the king or queen need to ask them first if they want to make a new law. Once the bill of rights was passed, England became a Constitutional Monarchy, meaning that the country is being governed by a group of people, not just the King or Queen. Over time more and more countries have been doing the same, passing the power to the parliament. This is almost like a democracy, except with a King or Queen that have minimal power.

Short Term Causes:

James was taking large quantities of money from the government to form his personal army, people feared this because they felt oppressed and they were scared that he would try to enforce his way of thinking by scaring the people with guns and an army.

Catholic Christians and Protestants had a lot of rivalry when James II came to power, he also substituted all of the parliament because they were protestants and he hired people that were more tolerant to his views. He created new laws to favor Catholics and to bring down Protestants, a lot of people were unhappy with these changes because it crippled their businesses or lifestyle. he caused his own parliament to attack him by inviting the Netherlands to take over England and enforce the Bill of Rights.

Spark Causes:

The main spark cause was when James II(Catholic Christian) had a new son. They thought that the power was going to pass on to Mary (Protestant) so the parliament wasn’t worried. But when the son was born, they were afraid that he would grow up to be a catholic and rule likes his father.

There are a lot of events that lead up to the Glorious revolution, some of them would be considered radical but they all lead to the creation of what is considered today England. Although England betrayed themselves two times in one war, it all turned out fine once the Netherlands got involved. The leading causes for the Glorious revolution would be the former King trying to change the country back into Catholicism, the people of England telling the Netherlands to invade England to kick James II off power, and thirdly when James’s son was born.

Treatments and preventions were scarce during the plague of 1665. People thought impure air was the cause of the disease so they encouraged kids to smoke that way they could be cleansed.
